The benefits of tequila are bountiful. While you mightn’t hear health gurus gunning for tequila like they do kale and kefir, the Mexican fave aids digestion, has probiotic components, and allows you to dance on a table without a care in the world—making the margarita the ideal Friday night cocktail.

Brisbane’s best bars are brimming with perfectly salty, sweet margaritas. Here are our faves.

Brooklyn Standard

Brisbane CBD

Swing back your perfectly mixed margarita along to some toe-tappin’ live music at underground Brisbane bar, Brooklyn Standard. If you really want to get into the swing of things drop by for Mariachi Monday Nights, where a spirited Mariachi band will squash your Monday blues like nothing else and a good dose of tequila will make you feel alive again.

Sonny’s House of Blues

Brisbane CBD

Pop on your finest ‘80s lycra and head to Sonny’s for some most excellent, Meixcan-influenced bar food—hello, fried chicken burger with jalapenos—to compliment their specialty: the margarita. Styled like an old LA dive bar, the menu is chockers with tequila mixes that will tempt even the most basic beer drinker to the salty side.

Beach Burrito

Fortitude Valley & West End

Sip on a classic frozen margarita under a brightly coloured umbrella out the back of Beach Burrito. Let the slushie element of these frozen cocktails take you back to your younger years—the margaritas here come in watermelon, mango and lemon lime flavour and way too easy to slurp. Mind the brain freeze.

Petrie Terrace

Peasant’s pomegranate margarita is a Brisbane cocktail that you’ll want to order by the litre. Made with pomegranate, agave and lime, this margarita is virtually guilt-free, and has a sweet and tangy taste.

Heya Bar

Fortitude Valley

Ultra-cool Heya Bar serves up a Mexican slipper, which is essentially a fruity margarita. With Tequila, melon, orange and lemon, get ready for a fruity punch amongst Asian-inspired decor and extremely cheap street eats.

The Fox Hotel

South Brisbane

The Fox Hotel’s Long Bar has a section of its menu dedicated to margaritas, so you can rest assured that they know what they’re doing. With seven varieties of margaritas in total, including a spicy jalapeño and a chocolate option, I think I know where I’m headed after work.

Fortitude Valley

Brand-spanking-new rooftop bar, Eleven serves a host of scrummy cocktails from their sleek and swanky setting overlooking the Brisbane skyline, but their margarita is a standout, and the perfect tipple to begin a night out you may or may not remember.

California Native

A chilled Cali vibe and some top-shelf tequila are guaranteed to bring the good times at new Brisbane restaurant, California Native. Expect tasty variations on the classic marg’.

West End

Jungle in West End brings some tiki to the Mexican bevvy, serving a mean margarita that is tough to top. The beachy feels of this hip little bar will leave you parched and keen for a second round.
