Le Monde has become a bit of an institution for the locals who work or live nearby. This brunch and coffee spot has built up a loyal following over the last two decades (aka two centuries in Surry Hills café years), known for reliably delicious classics without pretention, and next-level home-made brekkies and lunches to go.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get much better, here are six reasons to head in, or head back…

#1 The Pulled Pork Benedict

Salmon and bacon, you got nothin’ on this bad boy. The juicy pulled pork stays perfectly summery with the grilled asparagus and tangy tomato relish, as well as the crunchy pop or purple slaw.

#2 The Matcha Hotcakes

Keep your espresso to a single shot, because not only are these fruity hotcakes full of matcha, they also include a hearty dose of coconut espresso. All hail this perky start to the day, with a generous scoop of mascarpone.

#3 The Poached Pear Bircher

The spiced poached pear transforms this bircher from brunch staple to luscious treat, without detracting from its status as the I’m-being-good option (it’s certainly what we’re getting the morning after having the pulled pork bene).

#4 The Zucchini, Pumpkin & Haloumi Fritters

The go-to zucchini fritters have always induced many a happy sigh, but now the ante has well and truly been upped with the addition of haloumi and a sweet touch with pumpkin. The fried onion nestled in amongst the avocado and salad toppings add an addictive bit of crispiness we can’t stop craving.

#5 The Confit Pork Belly

With plenty of zingy accoutrements from pickles to avo salsa and orange sauce, the pork belly is donning a decidedly more summery outlook. Kinda like culinary sunglasses, but decidedly more drool-worthy.

#6 The Truffled Poached Eggs

This long time fave didn’t need too much tweaking, because, well, truffled poached eggs with avo and haloumi kind of sells itself. The addition of confit tomatoes, however, are total genius.

Of course, if there’s one dish that doesn’t need any changing, it’s the smoked salmon topped rosti, which will challenge your toast loyalties and make all hash browns quiver in comparison.

Nab a table with plenty of sunshine, and find out why the Surry Hills café scene is still one of Sydney’s best.
