After months of speculation, ‘Are they? Aren’t they?’, after the hotly anticipated engagement announcement (understatement of the century), and after that official photo call on the grounds of Kensington Palace Gardens, the day is finally approaching: HRH Prince Henry (aka Harry—we won’t judge you for not knowing his real name either) of Wales and Hollywood darling Meghan Markle are set to walk down the aisle!
Mark it in your diaries, put the kettle on and roll out the commemorative china, Australia; May 19 is set to see the nation come to a standstill…
Now, don’t kid yourself: even if you aren’t a ‘die-hard’ royalist or even keen on the celebrity gossip columns (oh yeah, us neither…), chances are you’ll be tuning in to catch a glimpse of the royal nuptials—or at the very least Ms. Markle’s dress/the first kiss on the balcony/the tear in Lizzie's eye/Wills and Kate stealing the limelight with their cute-to-boot brood—pick one. Pick any. Because Christ knows we will be.
But if you don’t want to kick it at home and would prefer to celebrate with the other peasants (we’ll be right there with you), then keep on reading. Here is everywhere that’s screening the royal wedding in Sydney.
Note: we know there’ll be more places popping up with this goodness in Sydney closer to the date so check back and we’ll keep you posted.
From 8pm, The Newport is hosting an al fresco screening of the royal nuptials. Plus, they’ve whipped up a special wedding cocktail made with Beefeater pink gin, and an elderflower lemon cake—just like the for-reals wedding cake itself! The Royal Hotel
Their Royal Wedding Gala Dinner has sold out, but you can still watch it live at their Royal Bar from 8pm. It normally screens sports matches, but not this Saturday. Reserve your spot, and you’ll get a free glass of sparkling on arrival! More info here.
Keg & Brew
Nothing will get you off the couch faster than the promise of $10 cocktails. Good time purveyors Keg & Brew will be mixing up two royal-themed cocktails—take your pick from the gin and elderflower “Markle Sparkle”, or the whiskey-based “When Harry Met Megan”. The screening kicks off at 7pm, and there’s a fancy dress competition too, so scrub up. More deets here: https://www.kegandbrew.com.au/royalwedding
Helm Bar & Bistro
From 11am, Helm Bar will be hosting a proper high tea—scones, cucumber sandwiches, and Pimms—for $45 per person. Bookings are essential, so get to it here. Otherwise, they’re screening the wedding from 7pm, and there will be $20 Pimms jugs all day!
Watching the royal wedding at Event Cinemas could be even better than real life. Why? Because they are literally bigger than life-size! Event Cinemas is offering tickets from $10 and they recommend you dress in a costume for the occasion—think bridesmaids, wedding guests or bride/groom—because why not. Buy your tickets here.
By order of the motherland, Bar Cleveland is throwing a big ol’ do on wedding day, transforming the bar into Bar Buckingham for one night only. The wedding will commence at 9pm but we recommend you head down early for cocktails, for obvious reasons. Also, it’s dress up so go big or go home. It’s all kicking off from 7pm and you’ll want to nab your spot here.
