Living in Brisbane, we’re used to copping the short end of the stick when it comes to hosting world-class sporting events (we’re looking at you Sydney and Melbourne), but, once a year, there is a place where the world’s greats come together under one roof—the Brisbane Tennis—and this year boasts one of the best draws we’ve seen in a long time.
Sporting fanatics, prepare yourselves because this year’s event, which is from the 3–12 of January, is coming in strong with epic matches that are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, and a selection of delicious food and drink stalls at the ready.
We’re particularly excited for the slew of food trucks set to pepper the event. From mouth-watering burgers to flavoursome Mexican fare and decadent desserts, you’ll be fuelled up for your spectating. And if you fancy a tipple, don’t bypass the Treehouse Deck and Aperol Spritz bar—that’s one surefire way to quench your thirst on a sweltering day at the tennis.
But beyond the drool-worthy eats, we’re most hyped for the chance to catch some of the world’s best female players hitting the court for the Brisbane International tournament from the 6–12 of January, including Queensland legend and World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty. The French Open champion will be kicking off the season in Brisbane and is amped to hit the local turf with a roaring home crowd in the stands.
Alongside Barty, defending title-holder and World No. 2, Karolina Pliskova, will be back and is more ready than ever to claim victory. “Winning the Brisbane title in 2019 set my season up and I am keen to lift the trophy for the third time in Queensland,” Pliskova says.
They will be joined by Japanese tennis player and World No. 3, Naomi Osaka, alongside seven-time Grand Slam winner, Venus Williams, who will make her Brisbane debut at the tournament. With a knockout draw, it’s safe to say we’re so ready to see these ladies slay on the court.
Rally the crew, don your sun hats and get ready for a smashing day of energetic matches and moreish eats because this is one fun sporting event not to miss this summer.
