Everyone loves free things and that is just a simple fact, especially when we factor Sydney’s rental prices and our weekly pizza allowance into the equation. These are the free things you can do this month to balance out the budget (and the pizza).
Pink Ribbon Breakfast
Yes ladies, it’s that time of year again and not only is the Pink Ribbon Breakfast a great opportunity to get your girls together for a low-key brunch, but you’ll raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation while you’re at it. The breakfast can really look however you want it to and it isn’t limited to girls only, so all bake sales, sausage sizzles and morning teas will make a big difference. If you aren’t really one for event planning, don’t stress, because the Pink Ribbon website has all of the information that you need to get going, completely with pre-event checklist.
Yoga From The Sky
Get your zen on above the city every Wednesday morning with Yoga from the Sky on the Observation Deck at Sydney Tower Eye. There is absolutely no better place to get your sun salutation on, than 250m above the CBD and surrounded by other like-minded people who have made the trek up to the top of the tower. The class is hosted by Sasha Hawley, who also leads yoga classes in the eastern suburbs with Yoga By The Beach. There’s also a light breakfast served following the class, win.
What: Yoga From The Sky

Walktober In Sydney
Walktober is part of an Active Leadership Program, which is creating a generation of school students who are inspiring the community to be more active each and every day. Basically, this is a virtual challenge with the goal to walk 16 000km Australia-wide in the month of October. You can sign up for the challenge on their website and all you have to do is register yourself (or your team) and select your distance and ask your family and friends to support your ambitious cause. All proceeds will go back in to our schools, to expand the leadership program to even more schools, so it’s a pretty worthy cause.
Free Yoga at Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel
Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel has mastered the balance between all of our favourite things, which are obviously food, wine and killer beach views. Well, now they’ve thrown free yoga in to the mix to celebrate the long weekend so you can wake up bright and early on Monday and take full advantage of your bonus day off. Afterwards, you can head up to the Beach Club for some fuel food, because breakfast by the beach is always a good idea.

Australian Life is the photography exhibition showing 22 close ups of Australia, beyond the iconic images of our country. The specific number is 22 because that is how many emerging and professional photographers works will show at this year’s Australian Life as finalists. Some images are bleak, some happy and others are just too real, like the photograph of seagulls chasing a chip, hanging out of the door of a car #straya.

Cookies Baking Class At Grandma’s
Round up a few children (ideally your own) and head to Grandma’s for a free baking class this school holidays because it is your best chance to gorge on homemade cookies without having to work for it. The class will take around an hour and all kids between five and eleven years old are welcome to join in on the foodie fun. This is a great chance to get your kids involved in their own food and to teach them how to make cookies so they can help you bake up a batch at home.

Rock With Laughter
Each month, The Star puts on a free comedy class and we can’t believe that we haven’t taken advantage of this every single month because some pretty freaking hilarious comedians have appeared in the past. This month, Darren Sanders will be headlining with support acts by Ciaram Lyons, Sam Bowring and Cam Duggan with Mikey Robbins as the host. The event is free, funny and beers will only cost you $6 once you’re through the door, so there is really no down side to Rock With Laughter.
What: Rock With Laughter
When: Thursday 27 October, from 7.30pm
Where: Rock Lily, The Star Casino
As part of the Telling Tales: Excursions in Narrative Form, Sonic Blossom is a performance-installation by Paris-based Taiwanese artist Lee Minweu. One of its most obvious distinguishing features is the opera singers who will periodically select a museum visitor to approach and ask “May I give you the gift of song?” before leading them to a chair and serenading them. It is just as intimate and fabulous as it sounds.
What: Sonic Blossom
When: until Sunday 9 October
Where: Museum of Contemporary Art Australia
Nothing is better than free, but cheap eats do come pretty close.
