Hear ye, beer ye! It’s the most wonderful time of the year—CRAFT BEER WEEK! Heck yeah! It’s Sydney’s fourth annual celebration of local and international craft beer and it promises to be bigger, better, and tastier than ever (is this even possible?). Delivering fine and casual dining events (read: shenanigans), as well as beer-ducation, unusual beer tastings, and behind-the-scenes access to the science of brewing, October 17th to 25th will see 130 craft beer-related events squeezed in over nine days.
We’ve picked out some of our favourites, but there is SO MUCH to check out.
Beer High Tea
Saturday 17th October
Harts Pub, The Rocks
A firm favourite every Craft Beer Week, this ladies only Beer High Tea is the more relaxed, younger sister of the traditional tea-drinking high tea. Come gather round, women both beer-loving and beer-curious, to unwind and taste, talk, and celebrate beer with other women who love and/or make beer. Because this is a high tea, complementary canapés will be served with your beer in fine china teacups (we’re joking about the tea cups. Maybe.)
Beer Creative Sensory Training – Beer Off Flavours
Wednesday 21st October
Beer Creative Campus, Petersham
If you’ve ever felt a bit out of your depth when it comes to understanding the nuances of craft beer, Beer Creative Sensory Training is for you. Your palate will be whipped into shape, trained to pick up the slightest off flavours as well as how off flavours come about and how, in the event of tragedy, you may resuscitate an off-tasting beer like a beer doctor. Expect the dimensions of beer to multiply and deepen in a beer-ception kind of way as you learn to identify the unspellable flavours including ethyl acetate, paper, metal, graininess, and acetaldehyde.
Sunday 18th October
Giant Dwarf, Redfern
If, like us, you have gotten a little jelly at photos of your chums eating pretzels bigger than their heads and steins longer than their forearms at Oktoberfest, rejoice because Giant Dwarf are hosting a German-Sydney-ish Oktoberfest fest that brings together the best of both worlds—without the tear-inducing airfare! Yaaaay! Picture long wooden tables, traditional German beers (and unusual younger cousins of German beers), as well as German music (bring your tuba) and the best bratwurst. PS. tickets come with a special commemorative glass that you can sit your first-born/puppy in.
Monday 19th October
Union Hotel, Newtown
If you like shenanigans and are almost athletic, then get ready to shine, because The Brewtathlon is coming for you. On the night, three punters will be grouped with a brewer from breweries like Fortitude Brewing, BrewCult, Cavalier Brewing, and Prickly Moses, to compete in a series of ridiculous pub sports. Because this is a serious athletic event, competitors will get brewery t-shirts to wear as they battle out over a number of rounds including Nerf gun shoot out, flip cup, beer knowledge, and a chilli-eating contest #vegan. Email ahead to lock in a team. Winning team gets their brewer a tap at the Union for a year, and punters share a $200 bar tab. For those challenged with a Nerf gun, there is a $50 bar tab for best fancy dress costume. Everybody’s a winner!
Backyard Brew Collaborative
Saturday 24th October
Public House Petersham
How does free pizza and beer sound? Pretty good yes? We thought so too, especially when the pizza's woodfired from the Inner West's coolest new pub. Sample a one-off collab beer exclusive (and sample lots, because proceeds will be going to Addison Road Community Centre), and once that's put some hair on your face, enter the Best Beard Competition. Then when you've had too much stout and chocolate, get up to some shenanigans with some bocce to work up an appetite for whatever is coming out of the wood fired oven. Welcome to pub heaven at Public House Petersham.
