Hickson’s Food & Wine | The Verdict

Situated on the brink of Sydney Harbour at the beautiful Walsh Bay (neatly tucked away on Pier 7), we recently whiled away a very tasty afternoon by the water at Hickson's Food & Wine, probably drank too much (give us a break, their wine list is 150-strong!), and fell a little bit in love with this new Sydney waterfront restaurant.

Opening its doors late last year, Hickson's Food & Wine joins the ranks of Lotus Dumpling Bar and The Theatre Bar at the End of the Wharf; restaurants which are breathing new life into Sydney's theatre precinct. Occupying the space that was formerly home to Firefly, Hickson's has since undergone a stunning new refurbishment, making full use of its waterfront position.

If you can manage to tear your eyes away from the view (and the wine list) for a moment, you'll find a seriously fresh, seasonal menu that's perfectly paired with their boutique wines. The focus at Hickson's is on Modern Australian share plates that celebrate the best of the season, but the food here is so good sharing will probably be the last thing on your mind.

Choose an assortment from the compact menu, or if you are dining in a group, the set menu offers incredible value (it's a total steal at $55 per head!). Morsels you must try include the kingfish ceviche with sweet corn, ginger and baby coriander; baby beetroot, buckwheat, organic sheep yoghurt and red char; scallops, green apple, shiso; and the larger plates of Kurobuta pork belly, barramundi, fennel and pistachio risotto, or veal and pork meatballs with oregano.

For dessert, we'd go for the chocolate and roast coconut brownie with passionfruit—an oldie but a goodie!

The wine list celebrates boutique wine producers from all over, including the Yarra Valley and Adelaide Hills, and wines from further abroad, like Southern Rhone and Provence in France.

Equally suited to cosy winter nights as it is for balmy summer evenings, this new Sydney wine bar is the perfect mix of wine, views, and great fare, and will have you coming back time and time again.
