The Butler Is At Your Service

By Anna May - 20 Dec 2014

When we caught wind of a rumour that the guys behind Bondi Hardware, The Botanist and SoCal were laying the foundations of a brand new bar and restaurant, we were tapping our fingers in anticipation. Finally, the news was announced and we hightailed it down to The Butler to get our hands on some of its French-Caribbean goodies.

It appears Potts Point is the place to be when you’re a new and trendy restaurant, and that’s exactly where you’ll find The Butler, which has opened its doors just in time for the cocktail season – score.

The venue’s French-Caribbean theme is pronounced but not overpowering, expanding over three levels of bar stools and tables, complete with wicker chairs, white ceiling fans and a pineapple tree or two. If you can, try to score yourself a table on the leafy terrace that offers mesmerising views of The Domain and CBD skyline.

The wine list reflects The Butler’s theme, with plenty of French options available. Cocktails are abundant and the menu is a testament to the stellar people behind the bar. There are three different styles of espresso martini. Gotta try ‘em all!

Service is chummy in the relaxed kind of way you want when you’re on a tropical island, and the menu is a tantalising mix of fresh seafood, bold, meaty dishes and some healthy delights, and we had to sample them all. Had to, okay? The grilled octopus with white beans and sherry vinegar was incredibly moreish, in that we wished we had more right now, and perfectly paired with the adorning cherry tomatoes, and meat lovers will drool over the creole spiced lamb ribs that fall off the bone at the slightest touch and are the perfect blend of strong tangy in flavour. Vegetarians and lovers of soy will delight in the jerk tofu, a perfect blend of sweet and spicy, served with chilli salsa and broccolini. Nom.

It was difficult to tear ourselves away from that view and head back to the office, it would have been all to easy to spend the afternoon sampling endless cocktail and ordering just one more bite to eat every so often.
