June, you were swell, July, we’ve had our moments, but August is here, baby, and we couldn’t be more excited! Fondly thought of as the buffer month between the dead of winter and the balmy weather of spring, August is pretty jam packed with things to do in Brisbane, see and taste in our fair ol’ city. We’ve got everything from an internationally-known kite festival to the beginning of Brisbane’s very own wine club to a Studio Ghibli film festival set to hit you right in the nostalgia feels. Oh Brisbane, don’t ever change.

Completely scrapped your weekend schedule? Good, because here’s 12 of the best events popping up in Brisbane this August.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival

Brisbane fashionistas, it’s your time to shine again as the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival rolls around for another fabulous year. Since the last event in 2015, the team behind the festival have been hard at work curating the best of the best for the crème de la crème of Queensland’s fashion events. Famous names like Christian Louboutin, Ella Moda and George Wu are set to appear, alongside a slew of other designers ready to strut their stuff. And since the focus of the event is about driving consumer interest in #fashion, you bet there’ll be plenty of opportunities to buy the pretty, pretty clothes. Don’t mind us, we’re just going full Gollum up in here.

When: 2731 August
Where: Old Government House

Redcliffe KiteFest

The good people of Redcliffe will be channelling their inner Mary Poppins with the 2017 edition of KiteFest. Celebrating all things kite and family related, KiteFest 2017 will feature the best kite-flyers and makers from around the world (yeah, that’s right, this festival has gone global). You can expect to see kites in the shape of astronauts, crazy geometric patterns and businessmen – and that’s even before we get to the work of our local legends. A huge array of markets, food trucks and music will accompany the wonders above, so you can be sure there’s something to do for every member of the family. Redcliffe, you’ve done it again.

When: Saturday 26–Sunday 27 August, 9am to 4pm
Where: Redcliffe

Effervescence Champagne Festival

There ain’t no party like a champagne party and Effervescence is taking it to a whole new level. Claiming to be the first of its kind in Australia, Effervescence Champagne Festival celebrates all things bubbly with a whole weekend’s worth of tastings and masterclasses. Champagne experts will guide you through the different regions and style of the world’s most beloved adult beverage, while plenty of food and music will be on hand to make your day complete. Heck, why not make a weekend of it with the festival’s VIP packages, combining luxury accommodation and breakfast, lunch and dinner accompanied with, you guessed it, champagne. Why yes, you do need a bit of pampering in August. Go on, treat yo’ self.

When: 11–13 August
Where: Spicers Hidden Vale

Bridge To Brisbane

The myth, the legend, the Brisbane marathon event of the season is back in August with the Bridge to Brisbane. After the 2016 course sold out, the race is back bigger and better than ever with a course that meanders through Brisbane’s most iconic landmarks, including the much hallowed run over the Story Bridge. Seriously guys, it makes for a great ‘gram photo. Plus it’s all for a good cause, with many teams participating raising funds for various charities. It’s time to show of all that hard work at the gym, fam.

Kinky Boots Arrives At QPAC

That’s right, the musical making Australia laugh its arse off is coming to Brisbane in August. Based on the movie of the same name, Kinky Boots tells the humble-yet-heart-warming story of Charlie Price, who is struggling to save his family’s shoe business when a chance encounter with a fashionable new friend changes both their lives forever. Oh and did we mention that the soundtrack was written by the one-and-only Cyndi Lauper? Don’t worry, we’ll wait while you book your tickets. See you there, guys!

When: From August 22
Where: Lyric Theatre, QPAC

Wine Club Wednesdays At Barbara

Guys, it’s finally happened, Brisbane has its very own wine club! We think we just shed a tear. The legends over at Barbara, the hip new bar on Warner Street, have fulfilled our heart’s desires. Every Wednesday a local wine seller will introduce club members to new and exotic wines you normally wouldn’t find on the traditional wine list. And because wine is not complete with nibbles, a local cheese seller will also be joining the party, along with DJ Greaves spinning some sweet tunes. The first August meeting will feature wine kings Cork and Co, who will be talking guests through the offerings from South Australian winery Unico Zelo. Quick, somebody pack a freshly baked baguette and we’ll be all set.

When: Starting Wednesday August 2
Where: Barbara, Fortitude Valley

Short+Sweet Festival

Combining the best local talent with performances that pack a punch, Short+Sweet Festival is back for a spectacular ninth year in August. The premise of the festival is simple: each play or cabaret act must be less than ten minutes long and can cover anything the imagination can think of. We’re talking fast-talking drama to ridiculous comedy to sultry smooth moves, one after the other after the other. At the end of the night the audience gets to vote for their favourites and send them to the Gala Finals. It’s short, it’s sweet and it’s shaping up to be a hootin’ good time. Don’t miss this one, guys.

When: Wednesday July 26 –Saturday August 5
Where: Visy Theatre, Brisbane Powerhouse

Freedom Then, Freedom Now Exhibition

The concept of freedom is a complex beast and Queensland is no stranger to its intricacies. This thought-provoking exhibition, currently showing at the State Library of Queensland, explores freedom in Queensland since the end of World War II through the use of photographs. Freedom Then, Freedom Now spans eight themes, ranging everywhere from censorship in books and magazines to the freedom of automotive technology to changing standards of what is and is not appropriate dress. Focusing on a side of Queensland we rarely stop to think about, Freedom Then, Freedom Now is a definite must-see for any Brisvegas resident.

When: Until October 1, 10:00am–5:00pm
Where: Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery, State Library of Queensland

Celebrate! Studio Ghibli Film Festival

Audiences world-wide have been continually captivated by the sheer scope and imagination of Studio Ghibli’s films. With movies about everything from sky pirates to, well, Totoro to low-key terrifying forest spirits, Ghibli will always have a special place in all our hearts. Luckily, Brisbane is getting the opportunity to share that love on the silver screen with the Celebrate! Studio Ghibli Film Festival. All 22 Studio Ghibli films will be screened at cinemas around Brisbane, so you’ve got no excuse not to tuck yourself away with popcorn and Howl’s Moving Castle. Run, don’t walk, friends.

Life With Paint At The Story Bridge Hotel

Brisbane has really embraced the whole art bandwagon lately. First we had paint and sip studios, then we had dedicated art supply stores popping up aplenty and now the Story Bridge Hotel is playing host to art classes every Wednesday night. That’s right, Zoe and Jaie from Life With Paint will be gracing us mere mortals with their help in bringing out the artist within, while the Story Bridge Hotel will be on hand to provide a constant supply of drinks, nibbles and music. All materials are provided and you get to bring your masterpiece home after the two hour session. Psh, everyone knows that the best artists indulged in a tipple or two before creating so why shouldn’t you. Hey, we’re not here to judge.
