Easy Melbourne Cup Catering

So you've been charged with organising what the office will be eating come cup day. Or you've opted to have friends around for lunch, but then thought, 'Hey, I really don't want to cook and would rather just put things out on plates'. Well, lucky for you my lazy friend, because we've done the hard yards, been through our list of caterers, tested some canapés, and put together our top five (in no order) of who to call in the lead up to the first Tuesday of November (aka Melbourne Cup).

1. Harveys

You will be ever so popular if you order from PJ McMillan. We love going to Harveys and when we're at an event and learn he's the one behind the food, our excitement is sky high. The rice paper rolls with shitake mushroom and tamarind dressing are a delight, so too is the pork terrine.

2. Tognini's

They've put together a catering menu dedicated just to Melbourne Cup day. Order up on platters of lemon and thyme char-grilled chickens, salads by the kilo, or plates piled high with sandwiches that burst with good things. Alternatively, order everyone their own 'Up and Running' picnic box, for individual boxes filled with chicken, glazed ham, salad and a brownie will await! You'll totally get bought a coffee form a colleague the next morning in thanks.

3. Tinderbox

Yup, it's a different choice, but the take-away pizzas from this James Street newbie are so good, they feed a famished hoard, and, hey, everybody loves pizza. The only dispute to be had is what to get on the pizzas. But who can say no to a classic? The Patata with kale, potato, chili, and taleggio will sit well with the masses.

4. Loaves and Fishes

Make like Jesus and feed a crowd with the assistance of this ever so appropriately named catering crew. The options and ways in which to feed your crowd are endless, but we love the idea (and your fellow eaters will, too) of the 'make your own burger station' that they'll set up for you.

5. Pamela's Pantry

Pamela would be our pick if hosting a small soirée at home. From the dainty little sandwiches to the classic cocktail choices (baby quiche Lorraines!), you really can't beat the basics.
