The Balfour Kitchen | The Verdict

By Jessica Pridmore - 14 Dec 2015

Eating is kind of a big deal in Brisbane. It’s our thing. I bet you’d be hard pushed to recall a single social situation that didn’t involve putting fork to face at some point.

Though we certainly have our pick of restaurants, not all are created equal. Even fewer can call themselves ‘award-winners’, and the ones that do are usually reserved for a special occasion that leave your pockets empty. The conundrum then, is finding a place to eat that is special but low-key, prestigious but relaxed, no

In the heart of New Farm, housed in a beautifully restored Queenslander, lies beloved Brisbane restaurant and luxury retreat, Spicers Balfour Hotel and The Balfour Kitchen. A staple dining spot for any discerning Brisbanite, this award-winning kitchen has been filling our bellies with some of the finest feasts for years.

For any of you not up to speed with The Balfour Kitchen—shame on you—their continual drawcard is their consistently creative menu and their dedication to bringing diners the freshest local produce around. The Balfour Kitchen continues to showcase their overarching ethos of locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and the upmost care when it comes to presentation. It’ll bring a tear to your eye.

Though the menu at The Balfour Kitchen changes on the regs, here’s a peek into what this kitchen dream team can do. Our faves include the hens yolk starter, the delectable suckling pig main, , and the saffron poached pearwith leatherwood milk,  honey and feuilletine for dessert; all bursting with local ingredients and beautifully complimentary native flavours. Come on an empty stomach!

What’s the best bit about dining at The Balfour Kitchen (other than the food)? Arguably, we think, the views. In stark contrast to other CBD restaurants, The Balfour Kitchen’s beautiful front deck and patio are enveloped by enormous Frangipani trees, providing guests with total privacy, and an escape from the city.

A true gem, The Balfour Kitchen is not into fads or trends; it’s simply about great-tasting food and an incredibly relaxing, welcoming atmosphere. What more could you ask for?
