F45 is the latest and greatest fitness trend sweeping the nation. But WTF is it? Well, I recently checked out F45 Northbridge and discovered that it’s high-intensity, functional interval training that’s completed in 45 minutes and has the potential to help you burn up to 1000 calories—and no I did not accidentally add a zero to that number.
Coupled with a healthy diet, F45 is one of the fastest ways to tone up and get fit—it’s no easy feat but it’s not as scary as everyone makes out. There are 27 different modules (workouts) which are either resistance or cardio based, meaning you get a whole lot of variety in your workouts, leaving your muscles guessing each time you rock up to class. Nice!
I rocked up to my class and the instructors got to work explaining the circuit we’d be doing in what felt like less than a minute, which I love—it’s hard enough carving out 45 minutes to exercise so I was ready to get down to business. Then I was buddied up with some people who looked as terrified as I felt and given a number representing the station I would be starting at.
Before I knew it, a buzzer sounded telling me it was time to get to work. It was at this point that I felt very unprepared for how fast I was required to move—perhaps a side-effect of the sloth-like life I lead?
F45 is interval training and in this particular program you’re required to perform each exercise for 35 seconds and rest for 25 seconds, so you don’t have a lot of time to move between stations. I picked up the pace fairly quickly though!
Making my way around the circuit, each 35 second interval was about the hardest I’d ever worked in my life. I even did chin ups—and by chin ups I mean one chin up unsupported and a whole bunch with some handy resistance bands helping me up.
Due to the fast pace, you don’t have a lot of time to think and there was no way I was remembering all of the exercises the trainers went through at the beginning, but it didn’t matter because there are TV screens everywhere with a tiny, fit dude (I’m predicting he is actually normal-sized in person) showing you what you have to do at each station. It’s so high tech I felt like I was living in the Nike+ Training Club app. There’s also a constant countdown so you know how much of the exercise and program you’ve huffed and puffed your way through.
Along the way the trainers ran around the room helping adjust weights, correct positions and shouting motivational titbits like, “you can do it”—because you will no doubt be telling yourself you can’t.
I’m happy to report that I made it through the class alive, but extremely exhausted and in the following days I had DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) like you wouldn’t believe. BUT after only one class I was already feeling fitter and stronger—the pay-off is real, folks!
Would I do it again? Definitely! You can really see why people get addicted to F45. It’s hard work, but the team environment coupled with the endorphin rush you experience post-workout will keep you coming back for more.
If you’re still undecided, F45 Northbridge offer a free two-week trial so you’ve really got nothing to lose!
