2018 is going to be a goood year for Brissy, we can feel it. As our fair-weather city continues its ongoing cultural transformation, we’re faced with a seemingly unending laundry list of places to visit. Everywhere you look there are new developments, restaurants and bars popping up in every pocket of the city—and we’re excited!
Here’s the top shelf Brisbane openings we’re most looking forward to checking out this year (so far).
X Cargo In The Valley
Announced late last year, X Cargo is right up there when it comes to Brisbane venues we’re hanging out for this year. A brand new social hub smack bang in the middle of the Valley, X Cargo will be an open-air mecca made predominantly from shipping containers, which will house rooftop terraces, pop up bars, restaurants, food trucks and even an outdoor cinema. Set to open in April, keep your eyes peeled for updates as they come in!
Spice Temple AND Rockpool Bar & Grill
Our love for Neil Perry knows no bounds, so we are absolutely champing at the bit in anticipation of these beloved Sydney and Melbourne institutions to open in Brisbane’s CBD early this year. While dates are still TBC as yet, our sources tell us we won’t have too long to wait before the doors open. Stay tuned.
Ok, so we know you love Longtime (same), so we’re positive you’re going to be excited about this crew’s new Japanese restaurant addition to the Brisbane dining scene. Pegged to open early this year, Honto will be a big, punchy take on Japanese dining and we’re totally here for it. Keep your eyes on site for official opening dates and then get in line.
Howard Smith Wharves
If you haven’t heard of the new Howard Smith Wharves development, don’t worry, it’s just a 3.4 hectare site underneath the Story Bridge, no biggie… But seriously, there’s talk of at least eight restaurants going in, set to open later this year, with venues run by the likes of Jonathan Barthelmess (the chef responsible for our Sydney favourites Cho Cho San and The Apollo), Matt Yazbek of glam Sydney and Melbourne Japanese spot, Toko, Andrew Baturo (from our fave Brisbane bar, The Gresham) is opening Stanley—a big, swanky Chinese restaurant and bar—, and interiors queen, Anna Spiro will be overseeing the décor for Overwater Bar. To top it off, esteemed hotel group, the Art Series will open their second Brisbane hotel right on the shorefront. Yep, it’s going to be luuuush.
e'cco Bistro 2.0
When we heard the news that iconic Brisbane restaurant, e’cco Bistro was closing its doors last year, we were devastated. But we now know e’cco is re-opening this year in a new location, taking a spot in the swanky Newstead food hub, Haven on Skyring Terrace. e’cco Bistro is set to open on March 2, so put it in your diaries.
It’s not overstating things to say that Jocelyn’s Provisions has got us through some tough times. There are just some things that only cake can fix, and Jocelyn’s just happens to make the best of ‘em. Newstead Provisions is their latest outpost and is set to open early this year. Cake for everyone!
Welcome To Bowen Hills
Brisbane is getting its very own dedicated food truck hub in the burgeoning King Street precinct—and it’s opening this February! The famed team from Melbourne icon, Welcome to Thornbury, are bringing their wildly successful ‘truckshop’ to Brissy, featuring a daily rotation of food truck vendors, including one of our all-time local faves, King of the Wings. And, if that’s not enough to impress you, there’ll also be a boutique gin bar—Swill—adjoining the Welcome to Bowen Hills precinct, so you’ve got a great option when you need something to wash down all those wings and tacos with.
W Hotel + The Westin In The CBD
Five-star hotels are opening everywhere this year it seems, and the W Hotel and The Westin are the two newest additions to Brisbane’s uber-luxe accommodation scene. The W opens in North Quay on March 15 and boasts an incredible spa (relaxation pods, anyone?), a next-level pool and cocktail deck, plus a world-class gym (felt necessary to include this, but we’re only here for the cocktails, let’s be real). Come November 5, the brand new 5-star Westin hotel will also open in the CBD. Our sources tell us no expense will be spared in terms of the finer details, but all we can think about is the swim-up bar in the hotel pool. Yes please!
In case you’ve completely missed the huge building site, James Street is getting a luxury hotel; enter, The Calile! Brought to us by the crew behind the James St Market, there’ll be a day spa, restaurant, and epic pool set up, which, combined with the unbeatable location guarantees a winner. Did someone say stay-cay?
Meanwhile, Brisbane also just scored a menu dedicated entirely to Nutella!
