The micro month of February is actually full to bursting so you’d better get busy or apply for some leave or something. Seriously, I don’t know how you’re going to get through everything otherwise. Here are 11 of the best things to do in Brisbane this February.
#1 Valentine’s Day
Don’t let the re-branding fool you, St Valentine was a hardcore badass of the first order. All the glossy, heart-shaped frippery is but a ruse because the love Valentine was representing is an intense and powerful affection that usually manifests three hours into a Netflixathon (with or without chill). Whether the object of your fondness is filial or freaky, today is a day to be spent with cool people that make you feel cool, so go do that.
When: 14 February
#2 West End Carnaval Parade and Party
Whip out your sequined knickers, the Rio Rhythmics Carnaval is back! Kicking off at 4pm the festivities rage until late with a packed agenda of Brazilian music, Forró dancing, extravagant headwear and INTENSE FEEL-GOOD PARTY VIBES. Ever heard of someone getting bored at a Carnaval? No, and you know why? IT DOESN’T HAPPEN. Check out the event page for more details of when and how this party rocket is going off.
When: 6 February
#3 The 29th of February!
As the Brigadoon of birthdays, February 29 is about as close to a unicorn as a day of the year can be. On this most rare and special of days we suggest hunting down a birthday child and surprising them with an elaborate tiered cake, or something similarly festive. This day is a gift of time adding an extra 24 hours to the 2016 clock so you’d be mad to let it go to waste. Catch up on sleep, power through that Netflix queue, eat a banana. Whatever you want, February 29 is YOUR oyster.
When: 29 February
#4 Brisbane Queer Film Festival
BQFF is back at the Powerhouse for the 2016 installment of heart-rending, tear-jerking cinema. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, it will change your life. Tickets range between $14 and $16 and the festival runs from Thursday 18 until Sunday 28. Check out the Powerhouse website for session times.
When: 18 February to 28 February
#5 Bananarama at the Tivoli
OG’s of the British pop scene, you’ll know Bananarama as the saviours of your burgeoning womanhood. This February they’re blowing through Brisbane to rekindle the cruel summer vibes at our very own Tivoli theatre and they were kind of hoping you’d be joining them. Rally the squad and let your inner goddess loose, you hopeless 80s party hound.
When: 12 February
#6 Superbowl 50
Just because you don’t understand the rules doesn’t mean you can’t join in the fun now does it? Get daytime crunk at our annual reminder of what a linebacker is and no matter the outcome, every Superbowl is a victory for Uncle Sam. With any luck the left shark might return for the half-time show.
When: 7 February
#7 St Jerome’s Laneway Festival (and after parties)
February marks the descent of our favourite music acts to the Brisbane Showgrounds for one hell of a skirmish at the St Jerome's Laneway Festival. Romp with the pick of your playlist with acts from Chvrches and Flume, to Grimes and The Smith Street Band, as well as so many others it’s making my head spin. And don’t forget the official after party at the Foundry. God bless you, Jerome.
When: 6 February
#8 Brisbane Street Art Festival
100 local and international artists are taking their craft to the lanes, brickwork and bare walls of Brisbane’s exterior in a bold effort to revamp the bleak urban wilderness. The festival promises music, street theatre, food stalls, workshops, sporadic pop-up events and live art. Get the full details here and apply as an artist or register your wall to be painted.
When: 6 February
#9 Ziggy Played Guitar
This February 21 The Foundry commemorates 50 years of ground-breaking music and artistry with a tribute evening to the life and work of David Bowie. Tickets are on sale now for what promises to be a transcendent evening with all proceeds are going to help fund cancer research.
When: 21 February
#10 Cycle of Giving
Going 100km in a car is nothing to brag about. Anyone can go for a burn along the M1 in relative air-conditioned comfort for little over an hour, but where’s the sense of accomplishment in that? Where’s the challenge? The fight? The lycra? Do some good and spread the love with the 100km bike ride Cycle of Giving to raise funds for organ transplant research, and all the fresh air and camaraderie you can handle.
When: 28 February
#11 Tattersalls Race Day
Giddy up for the first race event in 2016! Brisbane’s iconic Doomben Racecourse will transform itself for the annual Tattersalls Race Day, kicking off celebrations with champagne on the lawns, live music from Honey Remixed, and 8 races for us punters to have a flutter on.
