We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but we may run out of chocolate by 2020. Various publications have predicted, based on market and environmental factors, that we may be sucking supplies of cocoa dry. Help!
So, who’s to blame? Much akin to Making a Murderer, the facts are blurry. But, long story short, everyone is. Although, chocolate can’t escape the blame here; if it wasn’t so damn delicious we wouldn’t be in this predicament in the first place!
Experts are predicting that cacao may end up costing as much as gold in the near future due to the depletion of cacao stocks following severe droughts and plant diseases. Plus, because we’re so addicted to chocolate and chuck it in every damn dish, we’re running out of the stuff. We’ve grown accustomed to the finer things in life and consumers now demand a minimum of 70% cocoa, which is a far cry from our former obsession with milk chocolate.
Now, before you go into a frenzy and begin the preparations for your chocolate doomsday bunker, the International Cocoa Organisation says that world is currently safe from a chocopalyse: at least for now.
Our tip? Don't stockpile some of your Easter goodies, just in case.
