Man, we’re suckers for big news. And this, my friends, is uuuuuge.
Remember that good ol’ cooking show called MasterChef? Well, 2016’s runner-up Matt Sinclair has teamed up with three of his mates to open a brand spanking new restaurant on the Sunshine Coast. And it’s seriously awesome.
Named Sum Yung Guys, this Sunshine Beach joint is the lovechild of four super passionate chefs and hospo guys—Matt, Michael ‘Moe’ Rickard, Jeremiah Jones and Dylan Campbell. Throwing open its doors over the weekend, we dropped in for lunch earlier this week and it’s safe to say these boys have already garnered quite the following.
Serving share-style pan-Asian dishes, you’ll find a mix of Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and Korean flavours across the menu. We opt to be guided by front-of-house main man, Dylan and order plates that have already proven to be standouts, in a little under a week since their launch.
Designed to pepper out of the kitchen as they’re ready and shared among a table, we start with the cured Spanish mackerel delicately draped over nam jim and completed with coconut and kaffir lime. It looks like art, tastes incredible, and is finished before anyone can say ‘this is the life’. But we were thinking it.
Next up, is the Gangnam-style beef tartare which comes hidden among a net of crispy potato, and the most warming of curries—grilled snapper with coconut, ginger, turmeric and Thai basil. This is paired with steamed rice and cooked-to-perfection housemade roti—perfect for le scooping.
Now, by listening to us, you’d probably thinking it’s all about the food. But that’s where you’d be wrong. Sum Yung Guys have got those who are on a liquid diet, covered. Yep, their drinks list is packed with signature cocktails and out of restraint we only try two—the Pandan Old Fashioned and, our favourite, Kopi Time, a potent combo of bourbon, vodka, vanilla and Vietnamese coffee. Let’s just say this baby will have you waving sayonara to cloud nine in search of cloud gazillion. You’ve been warned.
Along with the tastes and the tipples, it’s the fit-out that really hits home that this is not your average restaurant. Oh no. Going against the Queensland trend of white and bright, the interior is almost moody, with dim lighting, mammoth murals taking over the walls and neon signage, from “Keep It Real” hanging over the kitchen to “Stay Wild” in the courtyard.
Uh-huh you read right. Sum Yung Guys, along with their indoor tables and bar seating, is also home to a pretty neat back courtyard area. Filled with a mix of bar tables, cane chairs and bench seating, this outdoor space is a little oasis with greenery, festoon lighting and even Buddha making an appearance. Perfect to down that clock-off drink and a snack, we’ve also been told it can be hired out for private use. Boom! Now we’re talking.
A little bit of mystery goes a long way, so as much as we could, we’re not going to divulge every single little thing about Sum Yung Guys. In fact, we’re going to cut ourselves off right there and do you all a favour by suggesting-slash-demanding you get in there asap and try it for yourself.
