If you’re anything like us, any getaway must (must!) involve delicious food and drink. Calories don’t count while you’re on holiday, which is why it’s okay encouraged to eat your way through every menu you get your hands on.

Booking a short break in Auckland is a no-brainer with an abundance of mouth-watering eats and drinks to devour. Yep, as well as incredible nature, adventure and shopping, Auckland is brimming with all things delicious—the ultimate combo, right?

We teamed up with Auckland Tourism to eat (and drink) our way around the delicious city. Here are six reasons why Auckland is the ultimate food and wine destination.

1. There’s Cuisine From All Four Corners Of The Globe

You don’t need to fork out on an around-the-world ticket to experience the world’s best cuisine. Nope, all you need is a ticket to Auckland! The vibrant, multi-cultural city has every country represented.

From moreish Chinese dumplings and handcrafted Italian gelato to aromatic Indian curry and mouth-watering Middle Eastern mezze, Auckland has it all. This is diversity at its finest.

2. Each Precinct Offers Something Unique (And Delish!)

In the heart of the city, Britomart and Federal Street are bustling with modern, world-class restaurants. Kick back in Ortolana’s sun-filled conservatory, discover handcrafted Italian pasta at Amano, devour a Vietnamese feast at Cafe Hanoi, and head to Federal Delicatessen for authentic New York-style cheesecake.

Alternatively, wine and dine overlooking the water at Viaduct Harbour or Wynyard Quarter. Here you’ll stumble upon White + Wong’s crispy roti rolls, Oyster & Chop’s shuckin’ good oysters, Baduzzi’s signature meatballs and Miss Clawdy’s finger-lickin’ fried chicken.

For something casual, head to the hip suburbs of Ponsonby or Takapuna. Ponsonby is bursting at the seams with bustling cafés serving brew-tiful coffee, while Takapuna is perfect for a beach-side ice-cream!

3. There’s An Entire ISLAND Dedicated To Wine

Just a 40-minute ferry ride from the CBD, Waiheke Island is a wine lover’s paradise! Surrounded by stunning scenery, the picturesque island is dotted with 30 wineries and vineyards.

Each one is unique in its own right so we suggest you drink your way around the island on a wine tour—when in Rome Auckland, right? Must-visit spots include Cable Bay, Mudbrick, Te Whau and Casita Miro.

Wine aside, Waiheke also is home to olive groves, beaches, art galleries and—of course—delish food to pair that wine with!

4. …And Plenty More Bevvies Back On Mainland!

Back on the mainland, there are other two wine regions to drink your way around: Matakana and Kumeu. To the north, Matakana’s wine trail will lead you through idyllic countryside and boutique wineries such as Brick Bay. In West Auckland, Kumeu is Auckland’s oldest wine-growing region and home to both well-known labels and quaint family-run vineyards. Kumeu River and Coopers Creek are both must-visit wineries. 

If you’d prefer a beersie, Auckland has you covered with plenty of craft beer breweries. Drink your way through a tasting paddle at Sawmill Brewery, Brothers Beer or Hallertau. Pro tip: stick around for a meal in Hallertau’s beer garden because the food is equally impressive!

5. Be Sure To Eat Your Way Around The Markets

Everyone knows the best thing about a market is the food—sample cheese, carb-load at bakery stalls and befriend local artisans. Whatever market you’re into—weekend, night or farmers—Auckland has plenty of scrumptious markets to check out!

Over the weekends, the bustling La Cigale French Market is all about fresh produce, artisan products and buttery, flaky pastries. Matakana Farmers’ Market showcases talented artisans, growers and farmers alongside live music. The bustling city-wide Night Markets are a multicultural feast of dumplings, pork buns and squid skewers. Our advice? Eat your way through ALL the markets.

6. Tag Along On A Foodie Tour

For the ultimate behind-the-scenes experience, sign up for a food tour. Rest assured, there’s something for every taste bud—Auckland even has a dumpling tour!
