Keeping up with the best events, new openings, pop ups, and good things to eat in Brisbane is no mean feat (and we would know!). To make your life that little bit easier, and because we love a good list, we’ve teamed up with Peroni to bring you What’s Trending: A one-stop guide to everything worth checking out in your city this month, so you won’t miss a thing.
The most wonderful time of the year has finally arrived, and goodness are there some things to do in Brisbane this month!? December is no time for slobbing on the couch, this month is totally jammed with a bunch of very festive festivities and a whole lot of eating, drinking, and merriment making. Whether you’re in to Christmas or not, there’s a whole lot going on that you can’t miss out on.
Here’s what’s trending in Brisbane this December.
#1. Gelato Messina Pops Up!
Eating ice cream in bulk this time of year is basically a given—Christmas or no Christmas—but when Australia’s favourite gelato, Gelato Messina announces that they’re popping up at Brisbane’s inaugural Christmas on Cribb markets, that’s another story altogether. Showcasing some of their most iconic flavours (plus some suitably seasonal additions) you’d be mad not to stock up your freezer for summer.
#2. QAGOMA Is Turning 10!
As part of their 10-year anniversary, QAGOMA is putting on a whole host of fabulous exhibitions this summer. Kicking off the festivities is Sugar Rush, presenting the very best contemporary artists in Australia, with a focus on colour and the imagination—pretty rad. Art buff or not, this is a must-do on the calendar and the chance to celebrate one of Brisbane’s most-loved galleries. Happy Birthday QAGOMA!
#3. Greenglass Brings A Touch Of Dining Class To The CBD
New dining hotspot, Greenglass has just opened its doors in Brisbane’s CBD. Championing a sort-of-secret location (hunt it down and you shall see), and serving up a delicious and regularly changing breakfast menu, Greenglass is set to be your summer dining hot spot. Look out for their new lunch and dinner menu, coming in hot later this month!
#4. Carb Load On D.O.C Approved Pizza!
I mean, not that we ever need an excuse to tuck in to pizza, but this is the month for indulgence so we figure why not indulge at one of Brisbane’s best pizzerias? Pizzeria Violetta is famous for its authentic pizza (their bases are D.O.C approved; Italy’s highest honour bestowed unto pizzerias the world over—neat, huh?), so book yourself a table, order the primavera (our top pick) and chill with a cold beer or two for the ultimate Christmas indulgence. No turkey required…
#5. Watch Movies Under The Stars
With the long hot summer nights comes Brisbane’s favourite outdoor cinema event; Roma St Parklands Christmas Movies In The Park. Take in the lush greenery of the park while kicking back to some of your favourite Christmas movies ever! From Home Alone, to Love Actually (clearly the best Chrissy movie ever made) get your festive fill.
#6. Light Up The Sky
Ditch the scrooges in your life; this is a very festive affair! Gather your favourite people and make your way to South Bank for the annual South Bank Christmas Firework Show. Settle in along the banks of the Brisbane River and gaze up to the sky to enjoy a festive firework extravaganza choreographed to classic Christmas tunes. We’re getting all mushy just thinking about it.
#7. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
If there’s one thing we’ll get out of bed for, it’s fried chicken (and no, we don’t mean out of a bucket; amateurs!). Brissie’s highly anticipated new opening, Winner Winner is opening in Paddington, and with their secret Nashville-style recipe on the menu, we predict lines down the street and a whole lot of finger-lickin feasting! BYO wet wipes essential…
#8. City Hall Gets LIT!
The magic of Christmas will literally be taking over King George Square this December. This year’s Gold Lotto City Hall Light Spectacular is bringing everyone’s favourite Christmas tale, The Night Before Christmas by way of light projection onto City Hall every evening between now and Christmas eve. Bring the kids (and your fellow big kids) and watch possibly the cutest light show you’ve ever seen. Merry Christmas one and all!
#9. An Homage To The Circus Shows Of Old
Cirque Du Soleil’s award-winning Kooza is popping up in Brisbane between now and January for a jaw-dropping new season. Showcasing stunning acrobatics, mixed with amazing costumes and stunts, Kooza pays homage to the vintage circus’ of old. If you’ve never been to a show by these guys, get ready to be totally shocked. They’re not the best circus in the world for nothing, you know.
#10. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
You know Christmas is almost here when you see camels walking down Queen St! No, you’re not hallucinating, these gorgeous creatures are part of the annual Nativity Christmas Parade. Shop til you drop, then step outside to watch the beautiful nativity scene march straight through the heart of town, every day between now and the big day. No, Santa is not a Bethlehem regular, though he will be popping up we can promise you that!
