In honour of Women’s History Month, Brisbane’s resident hip hop appreciation bar, Next Episode, is hosting a booming Sunday sesh to send out the month with a bang. An initiative of Dreamscape Events, the event will feature a headline set by DJ Dameeeela, with local rapper AYWIN hosting, so come down ready to cut loose.
AYWIN has been making waves in the local hip hop scene for a couple of years now. The 19-year-old artist is well on her way to greatness, so stop by her Soundcloud for a taste of what to expect. DJ feature Dameeeela is a local Yuggera woman who has hosted local sets at The Brightside as well as music festivals like Splendour in the Grass. One of the most dynamic voices in Brisbane’s hip hop community, you can check out Dameeeela’s work on Soundcloud.
From its origins in inner-city America, hip-hop has evolved as a genre, always reflecting the environment and socio-political climate it is performed in. This has led to hip-hop diversification with myriad musical styles across the globe, and the work of female artists has been pivotal in the development and evolution of hip-hop. This Sunday is all about honouring the power of female artists and their ongoing contributions to Australian hip-hop’s landscape.
