There are cafes you visit once or twice, then quickly forget about or enter into your ‘occasional rotation’ pool. Then there are the places you love. The go-to spots. The kind of places that immediately spring to mind when you wake up on Saturday morning, craving a great cup of coffee and yummy breakfast. Yeah, those places. Brown Dog Cafe is definitely the latter.

This low-key joint sits inconspicuously on the corner of Logan Road and Nile Street in Woolloongabba. It has a hole-in-the wall feel to it, with a few big windows inside that see you looking out to the street, watching the world go by. Inside and outside, the cafe is dotted with really cool artwork, including simple but ridiculously fun paintings from Where The Wild Things Are.

The decor is a mix of vintage tables and chairs, with a nice big shared table at the back perfect for a bigger group or family. There’s also some great bench seating outside, ideal for those summer mornings when the air is crisp and the sky is bright blue without a cloud in the sky.

That’s the thing about Brown Dog, the thing that makes it so good is how easy and laid-back it is. You could lose an entire morning blissed out here and you wouldn’t feel the slightest bit bad about it. This vibe flows through from the artwork and decor to the food too. The menu is simple, delicious and really well priced, with menu items that are reliable and downright enjoyable every time.

Menu favourites include the Lazy Dog Roll of ham, egg, cheese and HP Sauce and the Breakfast Burrito of home-made beans, avocado, rocket and fried egg on a tortilla. For a bigger start to your day, get stuck into the Dog’s Breakfast of haloumi, avocado, lemon, spinach and tomato with toast.

Vegetarians can sink their veggie loving teeth into a tasty avocado and lemon on turkish toast or home-made beans or toast. There’s also a goat’s feta, tomato, avocado and basil option serviced on tasty grain toast too.

If it sounds simple, that’s because it is and, in a world of ’60 degree-slow-cooked-half-dried-pan-ingested-twice-thrice-four-flipped’ cooking, sometimes a dang good, simple breakfast is exactly what you need. Just give me the food and make it taste good!

But wait, there’s more! Aside from a great breakfast menu that definitely will not break the bank, you’ll also find the coffee at Brown Dog is fantastic. It’s nice and strong but deliciously creamy too. If coffee isn’t your bag, try a salted caramel milkshake or a berry smoothie instead, both are excellent.

There’s a specials board which moves with the season and can include yummy bites like a beef and bacon burger, chilli con carne and a pulled pork roll to tie up those lunch-time hunger pangs. It also rocks out with a few refreshing beverages perfect for those hot summer days or, heck, just a nice cold beer.

If you’re in the market for a cafe to become your new go-to, look no further than Brown Dog Cafe. It’s a comfortable place to disappear for an hour or two with a great plate of food and a good cup of coffee. The service is great, the menu is tasty, really well-priced and the food is always consistently yum. Go there, eat there, love it and then add it to your auto-pilot Saturday morning breakfast rotation immediately.
