Spring Racing Style | The Trends To Follow (And To Ditch)

Cue the frocks, headpieces and your comfiest heels (aaand, perhaps the free-flowing Champagne?). The Spring Racing Carnival is here which, for some of us, can present quite the wardrobe conundrum.

We can spend hours mulling over the perfect lipstick shade, question whether or not to wear a fascinator, and debate whether stilettos are the most sensible option when on the grass… But the big question mark at the top of our racing-style list is what trends we need to follow, and which trends we should break this season. We’ve broken it down for you, to ensure a trackside fashion win no matter which race you’re attending.

Trends to Follow

Brush up on your race day etiquette

It may sound silly, but each race day does have its own ‘dress code’ – be it official or unofficial. Know which race day you are attending and know what you should be wearing. It’s okay to stretch the “rules” just a little… But keep in mind, that Derby Day is a day to embrace black and white attire, Melbourne Cup Day is the day to dress-up, whilst Oaks Day is Ladies Day and should be all about floral prints and feminine silhouettes.

Always opt for comfy shoes!

The Spring Racing Carnival is the perfect time to whip out your favourite wedges. Never wear a pair of heels you can’t spend a whole day in and never (ever!) wear brand new heels for the first time to a race day as tempting as it may be. There is nothing cute about waiting for an Uber trackside with heels-in-hand!

Don’t over-accessorise

With so many fun accessories to play with, it’s ever so easy to get carried away. Take a leaf out of Coco Chanel’s book and “take one thing off before you leave the house”.

Stay polished

The Spring Racing Carnival is a time to celebrate and embrace a bit of glamour! FYI crop-tops and cut out dresses exposing your midriff were officially banned from the Birdcage last year, so err on the side of caution!

Trends to Ditch

Trade-in your fascinators

Replace the frilly, the fluffy and the feathered fascinator for something a little more on-trend this season. Try a statement metallic headband (we can’t get enough of Victoria Novak’s amazing headbands and crowns or a straw boater-hat as the crowning glory to your ultimate race-day ensemble.

Make a statement!

Don’t be a slave to the trends; challenge the rules! Clashing prints and bold colours paired together can be a big win on the field—if done right. If you don’t know where to start, liven up your monochromatic Derby Day outfit with a clutch or pair of shoes with a pop of colour.

Go for separates

It’s not all about finding the perfect cocktail dress. A pantsuit can look incredibly chic or you can ooze feminine sophistication in lace pencil skirt paired with a silk-cami.

Let unexpected pieces do the talking

Contrary to race-day legend, the finishing touch to your ensemble doesn’t always have to be your headwear. Opt for out-of-the-box ways to make your outfit your own. Try a subtler headpiece paired with a super bold lip-colour, a perfect pastel manicure or a statement necklace or killer pair of earrings.
