Sometimes you can't go past good ol' meat and three veg, and what better way to up your iron intake and pump yourself full of protein, than with a fat and juicy steak at the pub. So, without further ado, we bring you the best steak nights in Melbourne.

Tuesday and Wednesday nights mean steak night at the Richmond Club Hotel, where $13 bags you a porterhouse with fat chips and salad. Secure a nook at their rooftop bar to watch the sun set, or hang out in the bar downstairs with all the rabble.

The Great Northern's airy beer garden is more than enough reason to pop in for their steak night each Tuesday, featuring a $12 juicy cut of rump served with chips and salad, or creamy mash and vegetables. They're known for having the most versatile tap beer range, with a new bunch every other week, so make sure you pair your beef with a pint.

Wednesdays at The Penny Black are not to be missed, with $12 steaks that are as big as your head, teamed with hot chips and creamy, dreamy mushroom sauce. All that, plus some of Brunswick's finest musical talent and a glorious beer garden – you'd be mad to miss out on one of the best steak nights in Melbourne (in our humble opinion).

Though The Bridge is famous for being a bit of a sausage fest, they also do a mean steak. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are steak nights, with a $13 porterhouse teamed with chips and salad. Make sure you get there early, though (or indeed, book), as it gets incredibly busy.

Recently revamped and basking in all of its refurbished glory, the Prahran Hotel's Tuesdays and Wednesdays pump with cashed-up corporates looking for a beef injection. Bag a circular booth and settle in for one of Melbourne's best steak nights. A porterhouse with pepper sauce, chips and salad will set you back a mere $14.

Head here on a Wednesday for one of the best steak nights in Melbourne, within a charming locals' pub. For $14, you'll get a plateful of tender porterhouse served with garlic butter, rocket salad and creamy potato bake. There's plenty of eye candy on offer for both sexes – the bar girls are super cute and the iron fest brings out the young uni-student beefcakes. Make sure you book, as steak nigth at The Kingston is very popular.

The Kingston | 55 Highett Street in Richmond

Port Melbourne's go-to for steak-hungry punters, the Railway Club Hotel is one of the busiest, most successful steak houses in Melbourne. Putting a bit of a twist on the pub steak night, you can pick your meat from the fridge, and with a huge range of cuts and sizes, you won't be disappointed. Thursday is the night to come for a special, though, with $12.50 steaks served with fat chips and red wine jus, brandy and peppercorn or mushroom sauce.

Monday and Tuesday is steak night at Temperance, with $15 getting you a big ol' porterhouse steak, chips and salad, with a pot or house wine thrown in for good measure. With a pretty good looking bar, street-side seating and a pumping turn out come post-work drinking time, it's a great place to eat, drink and save a few bob.

One of the prettier locations for steak night, The Clarendon shines as South Melbourne's premier pub destination. With a huge continental dining room, a street side cafe and bar, an upstairs dining room and cellar, it's the perfect spot for you and your buddies to enjoy a pitcher of Pimms. Monday night is steak night, with $16 getting you a prime piece of porterhouse, chips and salad, as long as you buy a drink first (as if you weren't going to anyway).

Though in an awkward location, PA's has always been a local fave amongst students and locals alike, especially as it hosts one of the best steak nights in Melbourne. Thursdays will set you back $15 for a juicy porterhouse with mashed potatoes and vegies. Hang around a bit later, and you'll be dancing on the table to Eagle Rock with your pants round your ankles by closing time – the only true way to enjoy a pub night.

The Prince Alfred Hotel | 191 Grattan Street in Carlton

Located on the corner of Swan and Church is the Swan Hotel, one of Richmond's most popular haunts. It's the sort of place you can come if you're wanting a big night on the beers or a cheeky froth after work, but the hungry should come for steak and pie night on a Thursday. A Porterhouse served with rocket and parmesan salad and scalloped potatoes will set you back just $12.
