Brace yourself, as we bring you 25 of Perth’s best cocktails from some of Perth's best bars, for your pre-kebab pleasure. It’s not in order of preference, because I love all my alcohol children equally.
The Epic Bloody Mary from Mechanics Institute is a local legend – spicy, flavoursome and adorned with a mini cheesburger, mini frankfurter, cornichon, celery stick, cocktail onion and wedge of cheese. Worth getting out of bed for and one of the best cocktails in Perth.
The Laneway Lounge
Cocktail sharing is caring at The Laneway Lounge. Dish out some “Nitro” Punch to your peeps – Ketel one citrus vodka, elderflower cordial, cider, lemonade, apple juice. It’s a showstopper, served in an antique punchbowl with dry ice.
Hula Bula bar is a kitschy cocktail lovers dream. Get into one of their famous Mai Tais – Golden Havana Club, Triple Sec Orgeat, fruit juices and white rum float. It’s a sure thing – as am I after a few too many of these.
Try the Tommys Margarita at El Publico on Uber trendy Beaufort Street. We reckon it's one of the best cocktails in Perth. That Tommy sure does know how to make a mean margarita and that El Publico sure knows how to make a Tommys Margarita.
Have a Mad Hatters cocktail experience at the seductive Perth bar, Bobeche. Pour out some Bobeche Iced Tea from your ornate teapot – Ketel One vodka, Tanqueray gin, Pampero Blanco rum, cherry brandy, sweet spice tea, lemon juice, lemonade. Bobeche knows that bearded barmen create the best cocktails.
Enriques School For To Bullfighting
Enriques School For To Bullfighting wins at gin. Put your face into their on-tap Supersonica Gintonica – their house blend gin tonica with apple and mint. It makes everyone around you good looking.
The sophisticated destinash for cocktail refinery, Perth Bar Lafayette will tickle your tastebuds with one of their slick cocktails. Get your hands on a Green Lady – fresh mint, lime, cucumber, Hendrick’s Gin, Cointreau.
This pick comes from hospitality lecturer and knowledgeable barman-about-town, Luke Dornan. His cocktail order? Choo Choo’s Classic Martini, with a twist. Classy, Luke, classy.
Cocktails and laundry come together at Lucky Chan's, the three-story noodle house and bar hidden behind a laundry façade. The cocktail fiends behind the Classroom serve up a delectable mix of complex tipples. Try the Cherry Blossom – Cherry Heerring, Cointreau, grenadine, fresh lemon and rosebud.
Let the bar nerds at The Classroom school you in cocktail. One of the best bars in Perth, our pick of the drinks comes from the Science section of their cocktail list (which is designed to “push the boundaries of molecular mixology” – lol, nerds). We bring you… the Smoking Rob Roy – Chivas Regal Extra Scotch Whisky, Cocci Di Torino Vermouth, whiskey barrel bitters, Peterson's smoke. Though we’re tempted to pick The Flamin’ Galah! – based on the name alone.
The Dominion League
The Dominion League didn’t reach their original goal – the succession of Western Australia from the rest of Australia (woah – you just learnt something) but they did learn how to mix a mean cocktail (more totally “factual” history…). Try the Partisan Tart before their new cocktail menu takes over – Pisco, lemon, Luxardo cherry, peach liquor shaken and served with a sugary rim. Mmmm history.
Jack Rabbit Slims
Slurp down a spiked milkshake at Pulp Fiction inspired bar, Jack Rabbit Slims. Our pick is the Salted Caramel Slim Shake – with a shot of Jamesons and vodka. Need I say more? No – so I’m going to waste my word count quoting Pulp Fiction: 'God-damn that’s a pretty f#$cking good milkshake.'
The margaritas at La Cholita are loco and some of the best cocktails in Perth. The Tamarind Margarita – Cholita coriander infused tequila, tamarind, lime and agave is our pick from this ever-popular Mexican joint. It’s a fiesta in your mouth. It makes me want to beat the living crap out of a piñata.
Set your dial to hipster and head to this back alley speakeasy for cocktail delights. Sneaky Tony laughs in the face of all the gin obsessed cocktail bars around town and says , gin is like sooo yesterday, drink this Pina Colada, and drink it ironically from a coconut water can.
It’s an East-Village-diner-style spot… but it’s sophisticated… it’s confusing, but it works. Try the Smarter than the Average Bear – East Village Root Beer, coffee liqueur, pepsi, vanilla liqueur topped with soda and draught beer.
The Old Crow
The Old Crow serves up generous helpings of food, drink and Southern hospitality. Pretend your date is on their way so they don’t look at you funny when you order a pitcher of cocktails. Try the Ginger Snaps pitcher – bourbon, apple schnapps, Absolut lemon, King’s Ginger liqueur, fresh lemon juice, fresh grated ginger, fresh mint, topped with lemonade and sparkling water. Then it’s all like… “boo hoo hoo, Tinder date stood me up again… see you tomorrow night.”
The Ellington Jazz Club
The Ellington Jazz Club is like, all sophisticated jazz feels and classic cocktails and stuff. Get your jazz hands on their Espresso Martini. It’s the best in P town.
A cosy little Perth local with a simple and effective cocktail list. Nestle into one of the train-seat booths at Swallow Bar with a Swallow Island Ice Tea – made with Wyborowa Vodka, love, Mount Gay Rum, nostalgia, Espolon Reposado Tequila, good times, Chinotto.
Who’s Your Mumma?
Who’s Your Mumma? You are! This low-key Freo locale slings out some of the best cocktails in Perth. Check the blackboard or their Facebook for corkers like Keys in the Bowl and Blind Date.
It’s the place to knock back bespoke cocktails in the comfort of your hoodie and thongs. 399 Bar is a multi-talented kind of guy when it comes to crafting cocktails – check the board out for their weekly creations or stick with a reliable classic – like the Apple Martini.
Ezra Pound is one of the best bars in Perth and makes some of the best cocktails in Perth but their website specifies a 'no creeping' policy—so obviously I'm torn. However, their ever-changing cocktail menu, displayed on the board nightly, is enough to make me put my creep away. I dare not name on particular choice lest they change their selection once more and make a fool of me. Though they do make a fine Dirty Vodka Martini.
The Old Laundry
This neighbourhood bar is both laid-back and sophisticated – a perfect spot for Angove street’s yoga mums. The Old Laundry has a divine selection of tipples for the savvy cocktail aficionado. Try the Jamaican Love – a perfectly sweet and sour Tiki punch – Appleton rum, lime, passionfruit and pineapple.
The cocktail bar component of The Mantle warehouse in Freo, Alter Ego keeps it old school with their classic prohibition and pre-prohibition era cocktails. Try the haute-hillbilly blend Uncle’s Moonshine – East Perth’s Moonshine, grapefruit bitters, lemon myrtle citrus.
An old fave with the city crowd, Helvetica keeps their cocktail list supa-fresh. Get friendly with the Mexican Pornstar – El Jimador Reposado Tequila, vanilla sugar, lime, passionfruit, Angostura Bitters, Bubbles. Just be careful when Googling this drink – the internet is an ugly place.
Frisk. Small Bar.
Frisk is a small bar that packs a big punch when it comes to dishing out some of Perth's best cocktails. Gin is their thang and they work it good in winning combos like the The Hilton – which is made with the actual blood of Paris Hilton. True story – gin, peach, apple, mint and blueberries.
